A Historic Cycling Adventure
Embarking on a 60-mile journey through the English countryside, I set out to retrace the footsteps of Britain's camping pioneers. This expedition, from Oxford to Surrey, was not just a physical challenge but a journey through time, celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Camping and Caravanning Club (CCC).
Unveiling the Past
The CCC, born in Oxford, has a rich history. Founded by Thomas Hiram Holding, a visionary who recognized the joy and health benefits of camping, the club began as the Association of Cycle Campers. Holding, an avid camper and inventor, created innovative gear, from lightweight tents to touring bags, making outdoor adventures more accessible.
Cycling Through Time
Pedaling along the National Cycle Route 57, I discovered a hidden Oxford, a secret passageway of sorts. The e-bike, a modern twist, added a layer of ease to the adventure. From Oxford to Radnage, the journey was a blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The Chiltern Cycleway, with its quiet roads and former railway tracks, offered a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle.
