The Deer Don't Care: A Reflection on the Insignificance of Hike Days

I spent a night battling no-see-ums, and the next day, I faced a challenging climb. With over 5000 feet of elevation gain ahead, I was determined to conquer it early. The first five miles led us to the summit of Apple Orchard Mountain, a weather radar station, and a peaceful grassy field. It was a tough but rewarding start to the day.

As the day progressed, I felt a sense of accomplishment, but also a realization that these days can feel insignificant. It's a common feeling, even in everyday life. But there was a silver lining: the deer.

Deer Indifference

What caught my attention was their remarkable indifference to my presence. I encountered multiple deer throughout the day, and their reactions were fascinating. Some were fearful, but most displayed a curious and almost welcoming demeanor. I felt a strange sense of connection with these creatures, as if they appreciated my company.

At Marble Spring Campsite, a buck and doe pair decided to join us for the evening. They followed me to the spring, where I filtered water, and their presence brought a sense of calm. I couldn't help but wonder if they, too, enjoyed our company.

The Insignificance of Hike Days

These days, like the one I experienced, often feel like mere steps towards a larger goal. But what if we shift our perspective? What if we embrace the idea that these days are not just means to an end but are also filled with moments of connection and wonder? The deer's indifference and eventual companionship remind us that sometimes, the most meaningful experiences are the ones we don't expect.

As I continue my journey, I plan to cherish these moments and appreciate the beauty in the ordinary. After all, life is a series of these days, and it's up to us to find meaning in them.
